The American Association of Equine Practitioners Foundation (AAEP) has announced that 25 veterinary students will receive Winner’s Circle scholarships to help defray the cost of their fourth year of study. The awards range in value from $1,500 to $5,000 per student and total $104,000 for the group. The Winner’s Circle program has awarded more than $1.1 million in scholarship funds since its inception in 2008.
Scholarship funding has become increasingly important to veterinary students in the face of rapidly rising vet school tuition costs. According to recent data from the American Association of Veterinary Medical colleges, average yearly tuition is $22,448 for in-state vet students and $46,352 for out of state vet students. More than half of all veterinary students have accrued debt of more than $150,000 by the time they graduate and face a difficult 2:1 debt to income ratio as young practitioners.
