The American Veterinary Medical Association is now offering free access to the AVMA Animal Health Studies Database (AAHSD), a resource designed to connect veterinary patients to clinical research studies. Veterinarians and pet owners are able to search the database to find research studies in which their patients might be eligible to participate. They may also submit data or samples that can contribute to veterinary medical research projects.
The website provides extensive detail on research studies including a project description, a list of potential risks and benefits, treatment information, and any financial benefits or compensation for study participants. Almost 200 active studies were listed during our visit to the site today.
The AAHSD will initially serve the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Further international expansion is expected and will be encouraged as the program gains exposure. This database has the potential to become an extremely valuable tool for veterinary practitioners and researchers.
