The American Veterinary Medical Association is celebrating National Pet Week from May 6-12, 2019. The theme for 2019 is “A Lifetime of Love.” The event was established in 1981 to encourage responsible pet ownership, promote the human-animal bond, and increase awareness of veterinary medicine. Veterinarians, veterinary technicians, school groups, and communities are encouraged to host informative educational sessions as a part of the event.
The National Pet Week website offers useful information for pet owners and educators. It also features a list of the top 10 pet owning states (for dogs and cats), various interactive games, and PowerPoint presentations on veterinary careers and pet ownership that can be used as teaching tools.
Also make sure to check out the student contests for next year’s event. The theme will be “Pets & Vets: The Perfect Duet” and the AVMA Auxiliary is seeking entries in the creative writing and poster contests through June 14. Students from grades K-12 are eligible to enter. The poster design will be used on a variety of promotional products including blankets, books, balloons, pencils, and bookmarks.
