Long Island University has announced that in addition to its plans to open a new college of veterinary medicine in 2019, the institution is adding a new four-year veterinary technology program for the Fall 2018 semester. The veterinary technology program is the first four-year program to be offered on Long Island, and is just the 21st accredited 4-year veterinary technology program in the country.
Approximately 40 students will be admitted to the Bachelor of Science program each year, and transfers from two-year vet tech associate degree programs will also be accepted. Students will be able to focus their studies through their choice of electives in four areas: behavior, business, rehabilitation, and research. General coursework will include animal management and handling, veterinary nursing, lab procedures, radiography, dental work, hospital management, and more.
The 4-year veterinary technology program will also include over 500 hours of clinical externship experience. LIU has partnered with several small animal hospitals, a teaching farm, zoos, research centers, the North Shore Animal League’s shelter hospital, and Manhattan’s Animal Medical Center to provide this valuable hands-on practical training.
