The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) has announced plans to replace the various veterinary technician titles (registered veterinary technician, licensed veterinary technician, certified veterinary technician, and licensed medical veterinary technician) with a new universal credential: registered veterinary nurse. This change will take time to implement in all 50 states, but NAVTA is looking to initiate legislative proceedings on the matter by 2018.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and other groups will work with NAVTA to establish unified credentialing procedures and requirements as a part of the Veterinary Nurse Initiative. It is expected that veterinary technicians will transition to the registered veterinary nurse title over the next several years. Veterinary nurse is a common title for such medical professionals in many other countries.
